A lady from Scarborough engaged my attention for a bit.
I’d asked her if she believed in God and she said ‘sort of”!
Like so many amateur theologians, she had her own views and wasn’t about to have them changed.
She didn’t attend any place of worship, nor read any books on the matter, she was just persuaded that her stance was the right one.
Like Israel in the time of the Judges, or Solomon:
Judges 21:25 (NKJV) In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
Proverbs 26:12 (NKJV) Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
Matthew 11:16–19 (NKJV) “But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions, and saying:
‘We played the flute for you,
And you did not dance;
We mourned to you,
And you did not lament.’
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children.”
You can almost hear the cogs turning as people consider the locomotive, and some do understand how it actually works. But you need to be an engineer or an enthusiast for that.
When it comes to knowing God there are more ‘experts’ than there are railway enthusiasts !
Matthew 15:14 (NKJV) “Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”
Jesus Christ came to make God known, and still does today.
John 1:18 (NKJV) No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.
He does so today through His recorded Word and the illumination of the Holy Spirit.
John 14:6 (NKJV) Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
John 15:26 (NKJV) “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.”
John 16:8 (NKJV) And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Who can explain His sending His Son to suffer and die as an offering for sin?
Who can explain How He arose from the dead as predicted on the third day?
Who can then explain how sinful people can be reconciled to God?
Who can authoritatively inform people how to be ready to meet the Holy and Righteous One.
BEWARE
Isaiah 8:20 (NKJV) To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
Acts 20:29–30 (NKJV) For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.
Beware of trusting your own opinions about God, be careful about who you listen to, seek God Himself in His word, and pray that His Spirit would give you light, life and salvation. It’s a matter of eternal life or death!
“The Bible without the Holy Spirit is a sun-dial by moonlight” (D. L. Moody).
Some people say that Jesus has nothing to say to this enlightened age. The truth is that with all its intellect, this age has never come up to Jesus. His character and truth continue to challenge the slow learners of every age.
