Colder but fine, what a privilege to get out to speak with people about the only Saviour and their need of His saving grace in their lives.

Some views of the Town:

If you can see yourself, get in touch we’d love to hear from you. If you can’t see yourself, get in touch anyway!

I Spoke With Three Believers Today:

Its a real delight to meet those who share the hope that comes from embracing Jesus Christ alone as Saviour.

Jude 3  Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.

The first was Toby, a fine young man who was happy to have his picture taken.

Toby, with Locomotive in the Background

Toby, with Locomotive in the Background

We very quickly found that we of one mind, I’d never met him before and may never meet him again as he was in town visiting family.

A simply enquiry as to whether he was ‘born again’ brought out a hearty ‘yes’ and before long we were talking about the Saviour and the need to speak of Him to the people around us.

The concept of being ‘born again’ lies at the heart of the distinction between real and pretend Christians. We know that as our natural birth gave us life in this world, the new birth gives the life of the world to come, right here and now.

A work of God, it opens the heart to love God and turns the feet to follow Jesus. As I didn’t decide to be born naturally, I don’t decide to be born again its the gracious gift of God.

These Bible Verses Explain What Happens:

John 1:12,13  But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

1Pe 1:3,4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,

1John 5:1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.

You are ‘born again’ when God the Holy Spirit gives you new life as you hear the word of God, this new life shows itself in that you turn from sin, to God and like a new born infant cries out, you cry out to Jesus to save you.

Jesus said its absolutely essential if you are to have any hope of seeing or entering the kingdom of God. There are some religious organisations which call themselves ‘churches’  where they say you are born again when a religious official says a few words over you and sprinkles water on your head, they didn’t get that from the Bible, you can’t trust those who add their own ideas to what God has said in Scripture. A very wise man called Agur once wrote:

Proverbs 30:6  Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.

Have you been born again?  Is the new birth you describe the same as that which Jesus described to Nicodemus in John chapter 5, its for adults, not babies.

The second was a lady from Staffordshire, she introduced herself as  a Gypsy Believer.

Again we quickly found that we were of the same persuasion, she looks to Jesus Christ for Salvation and Rests in the Work He has done on her behalf. So different to religious people who invariably depend on their own efforts to satisfy the justice of God. Have you ever read these words:

Romans 5:1-4  Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.

To be ‘justified’ is to be declared not guilty because another has borne your punishment and reconciled you to God. He who has done this is Jesus Christ, the only completely innocent man to have ever lived. The only one who could therefore bear the punishment others deserve for law breaking. As man He stands in the believer’s place, as God the merit of His sacrifice is infinite and therefore sufficient to clear the debt of all who call upon Him to save them.

This is what separates Believers from those trapped on the treadmill of Religion, God has specifically said that Jesus came to set men free, not to entrap them with religious ritual as they strive to gain merit. Let the Bible Speak:

John 8:36 “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Romans 4:7,8  “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered; blessed is the man to whom the LORD shall not impute sin.”

Romans 8:1  There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus,

This is why we are out each week talking to people about the Good News bound up in the Person of Jesus Christ.

We want to tell you about HIM!

We want to tell you about HIM!

The third person, actually a couple who live locally, worship with us regularly. They are like family, born of the same Spirit, partakers of the same hope, we expect to live forever in the presence of God because of the great work which Jesus Christ accomplished by dying and rising from the dead.

Ephesians 4:4-6  There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Another Fine Day To Be Out And About, But The Town Was Quiet!

We were unable to be at our regular spot, so set up in the middle of Market Place.

Good News indeed.

Good News indeed.

Few people could be persuaded to stop and talk today, our hour had almost finished before Rosalind and Ralph gave me about 30 minutes of their time.

An articulate Roman Catholic, Rosalind spoke gently and passionately of her religious convictions.
She was persuaded that the Church of Rome is the only true, visible, worldwide church of Christ.
She defended confessing sin to a man, spoke of the vital place of Mary as the mother of Christ.
Challenged my views as biased and based on anti Roman literature.
For her the Reformation was the Deformation, a tragedy which has resulted in people like me excluding myself from the true Church of Christ.

At times the debate was dramatic, but always friendly.

I was able to point out that forgiveness for sin against God cannot be given by a man.
That all must speak directly with God concerning the matter, as He alone can forgive sin.
That Jesus Christ is to be approached directly and not through His mother or other imaginary representative.
Scripture like Matthew chapter 10, makes this clear:
28  “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29  “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30  “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Or this, from Acts chapter 13:

38  Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins;
39  and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Mary is without doubt given a unique and highly honoured position as the human mother of the Holy Child, but is given no further special role beyond this in Scripture. At one point the Saviour Himself even turns her away: [note the ‘brothers’, she isn’t a ‘perpetual virgin’!]

Matthew Chapter 12 records these words:

47  Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.”
48  But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?”
49  And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!
50  “For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”

The Church of Rome has imposed the teaching of men on the people of God and must be rejected as corrupt.
Millions blindly follow its dogma and ultimately perish because they have been duped into thinking a man can pronounce their sin forgiven!

Here are a few BIBLE verses which clarify matters –

Proverbs 14:12  There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

Matthew 7:13  Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.

The last Word Belongs to Jesus:

John 10: 9  “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

Another fine Saturday

morning and we have

good news to share!

Nick ready to speak.

Nick, ready to speak.

PEOPLE WITH WHOM WE SPOKE:

My first conversation was with Anthony. He happily conceded the existence of God and that we will most certainly meet Him on the judgement day, but had no fear of doing so. He thought God would welcome welcome everyone regardless of who they were or what they’d done.
It took some time, but I think I was able to persuade him that such an outlook was really quite dangerous, ignoring the evidence freely available to all who would take time to examine what He has revealed about Himself in His book, the Bible.

John Explains this in his Gospel, Chapter 3 verse 36

“He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
Wrath describes God’s attitude toward those who do not believe on Jesus Christ, He is offended by their unbelief!
Because He has taken time to send and sacrifice His Son to save sinners, those who ignore His work of salvation are in great trouble now and will feel His displeasure on the day they meet Him.
The Good News is that Jesus Christ has borne the full weight of this wrath on behalf of all who trust Him.

1Thessalonians, chapter 5, and verse 9

For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

The 11 am locomotive draws attention.

The 11 am locomotive draws attention.

If only people paid as much attention to preparing to meet our Holy God!

Everyone falls into one of the following two categories, the Good News, is that you can transfer from the first to the second, TODAY!

Revelation chapter 1 and verse 7  :

Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

Hebrews chapter 9 verse 28  :

Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

Mark was the next person with whom I spoke. He was happy to agree to most of the Biblical truth that I shared with him, but kept saying that assurance of sin’s forgiven depended on whether you had enough faith. I happily explained to him that the object of faith was what mattered and not the amount of faith.  It isn’t a form of energy by which we save ourselves, but a resting in the promises and person of Jesus Christ to do for us what we could never do for ourselves. His philosophy leaves him and all like him on a merciless treadmill where you never know when enough is enough. Listen to the Bible:

Galatians chapter 3 verse 22 :

But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

Romans chapter 10 verse 9:

if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Acts chapter 16 verse 31

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Nick and Vanessa explaining the amazing grace of God.

Nick and Vanessa explaining the amazing grace of God.

Finally, I spoke with Julie. She had previously received and read literature from us, and was happy to receive more. We pray that the Lord will reveal Himself to her, giving her the faith to believe and be saved.

Saving faith may thus be defined as a voluntary turning from all hope and grounds based on self merit, and assuming an attitude of expectancy toward God, trusting Him to do a perfect saving work based only on the merit of Christ. You never know how much you really believe anything until its truth or falsehood becomes a matter of life and death. It is easy to say you believe a rope to be strong as long as you are merely using it to cord a box. But suppose you had to hang by that rope over a precipice. Wouldn’t you then first discover how much you really trusted it? C. S. Lewis, A Grief Observed Galaxie Software. (2002; 2002). 10,000 Sermon Illustrations. Biblical Studies Press.

2 Corinthians chapter 2, verse 14 :  Now thanks be to God  who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.

These were the words of our meditation and prayer before venturing out today and were are pleased to report His amazing kindness is allowing us to speak of the one who is ‘altogether lovely, the fairest of ten thousand to our soul’. [Song of Solomon 5:16, 10]. There is a great personal benefit in bearing the light of the Gospel to an indifferent world, it drives home the wondrous nature of the mercy by which God gave new life by His Word and Spirit.

His Great Love Has Made Us Children of God, a family that transcend ‘tribe and tongue and nation’. One of the joys of being out on the streets is meeting and encouraging other believers.

This week we met Adriana, a Romanian girl who is living in town and who was delighted to find like minded people to speak with. We were doubly delighted to have her join with us on Sunday Morning to worship the risen Saviour.

People with Whom We Spoke:

He was in town for a Lawn Bowls Competition. He was from the Lake District and said he was a Church Warden.

His willingness to listen was remarkable, I explained the priority of knowing Jesus Christ as the one who forgave sin, spoke of his need to be born again, asked whether he would get a welcome from God when he met Him? He responded with lots of information about his religion, but there did seem to be a seeking soul within, pray with me that this dear man will come to know God for himself and be graciously saved.

She was a local woman, who appeared to have a knowledge of Christ and His word but would not be drawn as to whether her sins were forgiven, typical of so many we meet, she has her own thoughts and opinions but no fellowship with believers and therefore a law unto herself.

Literature Table

Literature Table

Let me take a moment to remind you that when people are converted they are immediately part of the universal Church of Christ, but as disciples they are called to identify with a local congregation. The Lord’s purpose is plainly recorded in the Bible, He has come to build HIS Church and its members are to show their love to one another by caring and mutual encouragement and discipline.

Matthew Chapter 16, verse 18  :

I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

Acts Chapter 2 verse 47 b:

And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

John Chapter 13 verse 35:

“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Hebrews Chapter 10 verses 24 and 25:

Let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,  not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

If you do claim to be a believer, let me encourage you to take your place in the communities of His people that we might work together to convince the world of His great salvation.

CONVERSATIONS
Nick and Vanessa, waiting ........

Nick and Vanessa, waiting ........

Though we meet many  different people each week, those who pause to talk have very similar out looks. There appears to be an almost universal idea that ‘if I don’t do anything too bad’ then the ‘good’ that I do will be enough to convince God that I am worthy of a place in heaven. Surprised? I’m not, they are held captive by the same evil spirit, a self declared opponent of God and the beings He has created in His image..
The Apostle Paul writes these words in 2 Corinthians chapter 4, verses 3 and 4:
But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
I spoke with a number of professing believers today, 4 in all.
The Lord clearly has His people in other Christian groups and we are glad to meet them, but few have seem to have grasped the implications of the Great Commision.
Mark 16 verse 15 “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
We are privileged to have heard the gospel and through it to have come to know the author, and therefore the best equipped to recommend Him to all who will listen. Not every one is an evangelist, but all are witnesses, sometimes the only believer with whom an unbeliever ever has contact.
My Final Conversation of the Day.
Was with a 17 year old girl and her friend who hovered in the back ground.
What significance has the Gospel for one as young as this, one who is in the prime of life and with the world apparently lying at her feet? EVERY SIGNIFICANCE! Her life could really be worth living!
I was once 17, but I’m a lot older now, most grow old, some don’t!  Average ages mean that for everyone who reaches 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 there is one who doesn’t.
No one is guaranteed another breath, never mind another day. From our earliest years we learn to take precautions to avoid danger: Walk on the pavement [sidewalk] not the road. Look both ways before you cross a road. Don’t play with fire or put your fingers in the electricity sockets. I thank God for every one of those little, life preserving rules.
But why is it thought so strange that people need to be told to avoid the danger of hell fire, by fleeing to the Saviour, Jesus Christ.
We spoke for a while and it was soon clear that she’d not thought about herself as a sinner for a long time, but she was thinking now. She left when her friend eventually persuaded her to go, but with many words about the Saviour of Sinners in her head and some good literature and music in her hands.
These words of Solomon are 3000 years old but as fresh and relevant as any spoken today:
Ecclesiastes 12 verse 1
Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth,
Before the difficult days come,
And the years draw near when you say, “I have no pleasure in them”
The Lord has appointed His people as lights shining in the dark, and through the truth they pass on, the Holy Spirit graciously turns on the light of faith and dispels the darkness and bondage with which Satan keeps people captive.
2 Corinthians chapter 4 and verses:
For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake.
For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Matthew chapter 5 verses:
14  “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
16  “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Sunday Morning 24th August 08

The sermon this morning was “Behold the Lamb of God” from John’s Gospel chapter 1 verse 29.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

In it I explained the significance role of lambs as sacrifices in ancient Israel, then Jesus Christ role as ‘the Lamb of God’, and finally the call to ‘behold’ Him with the eyes of saving faith.

Sunday Morning 10th August 08

I preached today about the Lord Jesus being baptised by John, from Matthew chapter 3, verses 13 to 17.

Addressing the Lord’s words:

“Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”

I  sought to present the Lord Jesus acting in perfect obedience to all God’s commands, then His assuming the sin of His people and finally; Heaven’s affirmation of His accepting his great work with the promise of the power to accomplish it .

We had a lot of people in Church this morning, a number of families visiting the area for holiday / vacation, joined us to exalt in and magnify the God of all grace.
