WHAT’S IN A NAME?

WHO IS GOD? DOES HE HAVE A NAME? SHOULD WE BE USING IT?

There can only be only be one supreme being, one original source of all that exists.

Shakespeare includes the line: “”Nothing can come of nothing: speak again.” on the lips of King Lear King Lear (I, i, 92)

But the thought is much older, coming from the mouth of the ancient Greek  Parmenides and later from the Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius

Plain simple logic tells us there must be a transcendent, eternal being from whom all other things come!

My quest is to establish whether He has a Name and if so, what is it?

Should someone want to know my name, or for that matter your name, they would need to ask you or someone who had already found out.

Names must be revealed if they are to be known, God’s Name has been revealed:

Exodus 3:13–14 (NKJV)

13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”

The personal name of God revealed to Moses in the burning bush—“I AM WHO I AM”—conveyed something of His character (Ex. 3:14). According to Exodus 34:5–6, when the Lord “proclaimed the name of the Lord,” He added words that described His character. The name of the Lord was virtually synonymous with His presence: “For your wondrous works declare that your name is near” (Ps. 75:1). To know the name of God is thus to know God Himself (Ps. 91:14). For this reason, to “take the name of the Lord your God in vain” (Ex. 20:7) is to act in any way that is inconsistent with the profession that He is the Lord God.

[Youngblood, R. F., Bruce, F. F., & Harrison, R. K., Thomas Nelson Publishers (Eds.). (1995). In Nelson’s new illustrated Bible dictionary. Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson, Inc.]

In the Bible a name is much more than an identifier as it tends to be in our culture. Personal names (and even place names) were formed from words that had their own meanings. Thus, the people of the Bible were very conscious of the meaning of names. They believed there was a vital connection between the name and the person it identified. A name somehow represented the nature of the person.

[Youngblood, R. F., Bruce, F. F., & Harrison, R. K., Thomas Nelson Publishers (Eds.). (1995). In Nelson’s new illustrated Bible dictionary. Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson, Inc.]

Throughout the Old Testament God’s personal Name is YHWH [ancient Hebrew has no vowels, only consonants], in what now appears to be an almost superstitious reverence based on:

Exodus 20:7 (NKJV)

7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

the Jews substituted the word ‘adonai’ [my Lord] for YHWH to avoid breaking God’s Law. They emphasised the need to use this substitute by including the vowels of ‘adonai’ with YHWH in their written text.  The result of this being that when some of our medieval ancestors wanted to translate the word YHWH into our language, they either simply used LORD or included the vowels of ‘adonai’ to form the familiar word ‘Jehovah’.

JEHOVAH is not God’s name

Even those who claim to be His sole representatives today concede that they use ‘Jehovah’  though ‘no one today can say for sure exactly how people of Bible times pronounced YHWH’. And then excusing themselves with: ‘However should this prevent us from using God’s name?’ they proceed to assert that unless you use the name ‘Jehovah’ to address God, you are insulting Him! [From ‘What Does the Bible Really Teach’ page 195, Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York Inc. 2005]

GOD HAS REVEALED HIS NAME AND WE ARE TO USE AND TREASURE IT:

 Matthew 1:21 (NKJV)

21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

 Matthew 1:23 (NKJV)

23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

He is the One called YHWH – compare these two verses:

John 12:41 (NKJV)

41 These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.

Isaiah 6:3 (NKJV)

3 And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”

Jesus is God – God’s Name is Jesus!

Those who use it as intended find in Him a Friend and Saviour who delivers from the treadmill of man made religion.

His work on the Cross reconciles us to God and establishes an eternal relationship of life, begone the yokes that religious organisation coerce those they delude to embrace.

Matthew 11:28–30 (NKJV)

28 Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Acts 4:10–12 (NKJV)

10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

The compass-needle!

The compass-needle!

(Charles Spurgeon, “Flowers from a Puritan’s Garden” 1883)

The compass-needle may be shaken and agitated, but it never rests until it turns toward the pole!”

Thus our heart’s affections, when once magnetized by  the love of Christ, find no rest unless we turn to Him. The cares and labours of the day may carry our thoughts to other objects, even as a finger may turn the compass-needle to the east or west. But no sooner is the pressure removed, than our thoughts fly to the Well-beloved, just as the needle moves to its place.

We are unable to rest anywhere but in Jesus. The new birth has disqualified us for contentment with the world–and hence we have no choice but to find our all in Christ. Blessed necessity!
We are driven to Jesus, by an unrest which finds no remedy elsewhere!
We are drawn to Jesus, by an impulse which we have no desire to resist!

We mourn that we are subject to many deflections and disturbances; but you know, O Lord, that our inmost soul seeks after Yourself!

“As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for You, O God. I thirst for God, the living God!” Psalm 42:1-2

O God, You are my God, earnestly I seek You. My soul thirsts for You, my body longs for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water!” Psalm 63:1

Scientism, the Religion of Closed Minds

SCIENTISM A recent dialogue with a young man from Manchester exposed the awful prejudice against the Gospel that seems to permeate the younger generation.

It all began when I commented that our school children should be allowed to make up their own minds on how our world came into being, that the arguments for Evolution should be presented together with those for Intelligent Design.

“I’m happy for them to have ‘all’ the evidence and then let them make up their own minds, isn’t that what education is about?” I wrote.

“you can tell them that people believe in god. But you could never give them any evidence because there is none.” Was one of the replies.

Links to peer reviewed research from the Discovery Institute simply resulted in a plaintiff cry to a certain Mr Dawkins for evaluation.

http://www.discovery.org/a/2640

Suggesting that they see for themselves that many eminent ‘scientists’ are not convinced by the fairy tale called ‘evolution’ I gave them this link:

http://www.discovery.org/a/10661

Pointing out that the so called ‘big bang’ is not and cannot be scientifically verified cut no ice. Attempts to demonstrate that there are other types of ‘evidence’, and that our whole study of history and that of our law courts relies upon evidence and facts was dismissed as make believe.

This quickly exposed the hand of my correspondent, the only evidence allowed is what he deigns to be evidence. Nothing must be allowed except that which he decides can be scientifically verified. This is religion at it’s worst – Scientism!

From here on in abuse and ridicule became their way to deal with serious discussion, no matter what I proposed, the self appointed judge and jury of Scientists barred it as inadmissible.

THERE ARE NONE SO BLIND AS THOSE WHO WILL NOT SEE.

My assertion that there is historical evidence for the existence of God in the resurrection of Jesus Christ is simply scorned:

“every one of the pieces of evidence was simply someone’s account of the event. That isn’t evidence by any measure”.

“there’s no actual physical evidence to support it. Just what’s written in people’s accounts of the event.”

By this standard our courts of law have no basis for operation, and history has just become bunk!

I’M GLAD TO SAY THAT DESPITE THE BLUSTER AND SMOKE SCREEN THE EVIDENCE FOR GOD’S EXISTENCE STANDS UNTARNISHED.

Look here I said:

www.bible.ca/d-resurrection-evidence-Josh-McDowell.htm

But closed minds have no place for facts, they simply spew a flood of scorn!

I even wanted him to see that his own arguments have been ably demolished, but to no avail:

http://academics.holycross.edu/files/crec/resurrection-debate-transcript.pdf

I DREAD THE DAY SUCH PEOPLE ARE IN POSITIONS OF POWER AND INFLUENCE.

But wait, it’s too late, Scientism has become the official religion of our education system.

A MILLION EURO QUESTION!

A Million Euro Tract

A Million Euro Question - If you died today would you go to Heaven?

IF ONLY IT WERE

.

A MILLION EUROS!

Some refused to accept it, but most people just took it and read it as they walked on, or put it in a pocket or purse.

One man though, was obviously stimulated by the thought of what he’d do if he were handed a million Euros.

Lot’s of people live in a dream world, imagining all their problems would be over if they just had enough money.

Try telling that to the ex IMF chairman, or the footballer who spent so much to keep his name out of the press.

Money is useful, but it’s unable to meet our every need. Certainly can’t buy or guarantee peace with God.

Luke 9:25 (NKJV)

For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?

Mark 8:37 (NKJV)

Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

Only two of many words Jesus spoke to challenge man’s perspective on life.

One day, only too soon your appointment with God will  demand that you leave all behind and stand before Him.

Psalm 24:1 (NKJV)

The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.

Matthew 18:23–24 (NKJV)

Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.  And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.

THE MILLION EURO QUESTION WILL HAVE TO BE ANSWERED!

Will YOU go to heaven? – If your only answer is about what you’ve done – then the answer is NO!

Eternal life in heaven is entirely at the discretion of the Living God – through the gift of His dear Son.

John 3:16 (NKJV)

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

What have you done with God’s Gift? Most refuse Him, insanely imagining that they can buy their way into heaven with their own ‘best’ efforts.

Look around, all that we do results in the creation of rubbish, the very best of our works will one day be consigned to the rubbish heap.

That's me at the table

Only one man stopped to talk today and he kept us busy for about 40 minutes.

An interesting discussion, it ranged from his conviction that we needed to find another word for ‘sin’ because no one understood the word any more, to the merits of Barth’s theology which revealed itself in his conviction that the Bible became the Word of God when applied by the Spirit.  He told us that while we spoke of ‘grace’ he would prefer to speak about ‘peace’, he’d trained for the anglican ministry but believed in baptism by immersion, his favourite portion of Scripture was the book of James!

The many doors that opened gave ample opportunity to present Jesus Christ as the one who gives peace to those who confess themselves to be ‘sinners’ and cast themselves upon His mercy.

GOSPEL PREACHERS ARE THE TRUE PEACE MAKERS.

Matthew chapter 5 and verse:

Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.

Telling mankind how to find ‘peace with God’

Romans chapter 5 and verses:

1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

That they might know the ‘peace of God’,

Philippians 4, verses:

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

and thus calling all men everywhere to throw down their arms and end their war against God,

2Corinthians chapter 5 verse:

20  Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.

My conversation with Mark.

Just as we were about finished setting up the table a young man called Mark engaged me in conversation. He was looking for information about places to walk his dog which we were able to furnish. But with it I offered a leaflet which asks, ‘Are you good enough to go to heaven’. Its a very useful tool in bring people to understand their sinfulness and the need of the Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Our conversation went round and round on the same subjects for about half an hour, so I was able to explain the gospel and the need to personally embrace Jesus Christ as Saviour. Mark left with a collection of leaflets, may it be the pleasure of God to bring about his new birth.

Mark is typical of this sceptical generation. They know what they don’t want to believe and confirm it to themselves from a distorted understanding of the Bible.

His Argument was: Men Wrote The Bible, not God. – Now any Christian would answer that man’s involvement in giving us the Scriptures is only part of the story. 40 men did indeed record the words, but each of them was directed by God Himself. The unity of the Bible indicating that the one Supreme Being over saw those who wrote. Peter says this in his second epistle, chapter 1 and verse 21:

“prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”

As Micheal Green explains in His Commentary:

“The word moved is a maritime expression (Acts 17:15,17) used of a ship carried along by the wind in its sails. The prophets raised their sails and God filled them, and carried them along in the direction He wished. … Revelation was not a matter of passive reception; it meant active co-operation. God did not use instruments, but men.”

“The Bible was written over a period of about 1,500 years by more than forty different human authors.

From a variety of backgrounds, including Joshua (a military general), Daniel (a prime minister), Peter (a fisherman), and Nehemiah (a cupbearer).

They wrote in different places, Different Continents And Languages

The wilderness (Moses), prison (Paul), and Patmos exile (John). Three different continents (Africa, Asia, Europe), and in three different languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek).

The contents of the Bible deal with many controversial subjects.

Yet, the Bible is a unity.

From beginning to end, there’s one unfolding story –

God’s plan of salvation for mankind. “
