Rained Off ……….

No Matter How You Try, There Are Some Things You’ve No Control Over!

The one subject of conversation that you can be sure will come up in these fair isles is our weather, whether we moan, groan or even delight at times, we’ve always got something to talk about!

Though we watch the forecasts or get an app on our phone, we appear to be mere pawns in the drama of high and low pressure and their resulting effects.

A long time ago this was pointed out to Job as evidence of his puny, finite limitations.

Job 38:34 (NKJV) “Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that an abundance of water may cover you?

Job 38:37 (NKJV)  Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven?

Our ever changing weather ought to remind us of our limitations, as day after day passes, that our days will also pass!

He who orders our world, determines our days that we might humbly seek His favour, and enter into the wonder of His loving salvation.

Job 40:1–2 (NKJV) Moreover the Lord answered Job, and said:  “Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him? He who rebukes God, let him answer it.”

Psalm 90:12 (NKJV) So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Towns and villages like Pickering should also challenge us to remember that we are finite, and will soon depart to meet our Maker.

Market Place, Panoramic View

Jesus came to rescue those who are lost, to save those who are perishing, to give everlasting life to all who ask – at last, life now makes sense!

John 10:10 (NKJV) The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

May you become aware of your limitations, transience and fleeting existence – remember you are to meet the Maker and Manager of our weather. He who also holds your life in His hand will one day take you from time to dwell in eternity, Jesus Christ, lived, died and arose that all who believe might enjoy eternal life and escape eternal death. Call on Him today.

And Then It Rained!

CAUGHT OUT!

Today Started Out Like Any Other Saturday Lunch Time.

It was the ’60’s Weekend’ and there were a few people in town and some 60’s transport around.

A number of people happily took the the ‘Real Life’ leaflet.

A man paused and looked at the table, so I asked: ‘Have you heard the Gospel?’

Pickering Market Place

Goodnews for Some

‘Oh, yes’, was his reply, ‘My sister is really into it’.

‘How about you’? ‘I used to be, but not any more.’ ‘Perhaps it’s time you reconsidered’?

‘No thanks’, was his reply and off he went round the corner and out of sight!

Matthew 7:13,14  (NKJV) “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

A young woman stopped, the testimony of Debbie Flood caught her attention

Our few minutes of conversation ended abruptly when she suddenly said: ‘I don’t like to be preached at’, deposited the leaflets she’d taken back on the table and left!

Mark 4:40 (NKJV) But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”

“Sinners never have true joy or feel inward peace, because; ‘there is no peace for the wicked,’ says the Lord (Isaiah 57:21).

We worry too much. We follow the example of our earthly father Adam when he confessed to God, “I was afraid … and hid” (Gen. 3:10). We have become a fearful people, even though most of our fears are often unfounded or just plain silly, because we do not have our eyes on the sparrow.

 THEN THE RAIN CAME:

Pickering Station

Steaming in the Rain.

Time to pack up and go home? But wait:

Matthew 7:24–27 (NKJV) “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:  and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

Every Shower Reminds Us of The Need to Be Safe on the Solid Rock of Salvation through Faith in Jesus Christ. High and Dry – Are You?

A Peanuts cartoon pictured Lucy and Linus looking out the window at a steady downpour of rain. “Boy,” said Lucy, “look at it rain. What if it floods the whole world?”
“It will never do that.” Linus replied confidently. “In the ninth chapter of Genesis, God promised Noah that would never happen again, and the sign of the promise is the rainbow.”
“You’ve taken a great load off my mind,” said Lucy with a relieved smile. “Sound theology,” pontificated Linus, “has a way of doing that!”

Raining Again.

All Covered Up.

Nothing to do but hand out some leaflets.

For the first time someone crumpled one up and put it in the bin!

Surprised? No! Disappointed? Yes!!

Most folks take them and at least seem to wait until they get home before they decide what to do with them.

Jesus wept for people like that:

 Luke 13:34 (NKJV)

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!

Like The Prodigal Son of old, they’d rather have a good time now than live in God’s World and Presence.

The encouraging thing is that the Prodigal came to his senses –  and returned to enjoy God’s Love and Favour.

 Luke 15:17–19 (NKJV)

“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!  I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’

I hope you know the conclusion of the story, and that you will be encouraged to turn back to God!

Take note thought of that little word ‘sin’ – it’s really gone out of fashion.

Man calls sin an accident; God calls it an abomination. Man calls sin a blunder; God calls it blindness. Man calls sin a chance; God call it a choice. Man calls sin a defect; God calls it a disease. Man calls sin an error; God calls it enmity. Man calls sin fascination; God calls it fatality. Man calls sin infirmity; God calls it fatality. Man calls sin infirmity; God calls it iniquity. Man calls sin luxury; God calls it lawlessness. Man calls sin a trifle; God calls it tragedy. Man calls sin a mistake; God calls it madness. Man calls sin a weakness; God calls it willfulness. There is only one remedy for sin—the precious blood of Christ, which was shed for the remission of sins on Calvary’s Cross.—Author Unknown

Fashion aside, it’s the reason people treat the gospel with contempt and through away any reminders.

Unbelief is the most destructive sin known to man, but it can all change, and does in those who have the change of mind that works repentance and takes you back to confess your folly to our God and Father.

Jesus used only 504 words to tell the Parable of the Prodigal Son, judged by some to be the greatest story ever written. James Hastings

There is hope today, even for the young lady who threw the leaflet away, if she will but ‘come to her senses’, repent and return home.

Mark 1:15 (NKJV) [The words of Jesus’ first recorded sermon]

“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Jesus Christ, lived and died that Prodigals might be welcomed home.

The Gospel is for all who've come to their senses.

Don't huff and puff, turn back to God today.

RAINING!

Raining!

Stopped Raining! Still Wet.

Question: What normally follows two days of rain?

..
Answer: Monday.

People Moan and Grown about it, but we can’t live without water!

Water is absolutely essential to every form of life. Every living cell of both plants and animals depends on water.
We have about five litres of blood in the blood vessels of our body. Water makes up about three litres of the blood fluid.
Of every ten pounds of our weight, about seven pounds are water.
Without water to drink, we would die in a short time.

Although the Bible is not a science book, the descriptions referring to scientific processes are accurate.

Take, for example, the hydrological cycle. Rain or snow falls to the ground and runs off into streams, which run into rivers, which run into the sea. Water evaporates from the surface of the ocean and returns to the clouds, where it becomes rain and snow and falls to the ground again. The hydrological cycle is a discovery of modern times, but the Bible speaks of it in Isaiah 55:10

Isaiah 55:10 (NKJV)

For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater.

Job 36:26–28 (NKJV)

“Behold, God is great, and we do not know Him; nor can the number of His years be discovered. For He draws up drops of water, which distill as rain from the mist, which the clouds drop down and pour abundantly on man.

The recurring cycle of rains and crops is abundant proof that God, who has created all things, upholds what he has made.

Acts 14:15–17 (NKJV)

“you should turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them, who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways. Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.”

ALL CREATION CALLS US TO WORSHIP AND SURRENDER TO HIS CARE

 We love sunshine

Balmy weather and magnificent locomotive 80072

Enjoying the street cafe in the sunshine.

Together with the rain, they make life possible.

They are God’s Gracious Gifts:

Matthew 5:45 (NKJV)

for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

Gifts, which like the gift of His Son, reveal to us our need to repent and believe the Gospel.

Don’t give in to complaining about the rain, remember it’s function, be thankful, recognize God’s goodness and live!

Acts 17:30–31 (NKJV)

Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”

THE GOOD NEWS

KINDNESS

People out again after the rain.

Matthew 5:45 (NKJV)  He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

“I Think

,

the Most Important

,

Characteristic of God

,

is His Kindness”

That’s What ‘Jim’ Thinks Anyway! We’ve spoken now for 4 weeks or more, and he approached me to raise the matter. I’ve been thinking since last we spoke, and that’s the conclusion to which I have come.

He’d gone away the previous week to consider the searching question: ‘Am I good enough to be allowed to enter heaven?’ We’d spoken about the fact that everyone sins, and that there are no perfect people in the world.

Romans 3:23 (NKJV)  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God .

We’d considered further that God is Perfect, and looks for Perfection in those who would enter His heaven.

Matthew 5:48 (NKJV) Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Concluding therefore that no living person is ‘good enough’ to dwell with God forever.

Romans 3:10 (NKJV) As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one.

What Is Sin?
Sin is anything that is contrary to the law or will of God. For example: if you lie, you have sinned. Why? Because God has said not to lie (Ex. 20:16). If you do what God has forbidden, then you have sinned. In addition, if you do not do what God has commanded, you sin (James 4:17). Either way, the result is eternal separation from God (Is. 59:2). Sin is lawlessness (1 John 1:3) and unrighteousness (1 John 5:17). Sin leads to blindness (John 9:41) and death (Rom. 6:23).

Serious Stuff – Jim had gone home to consider where he stood before God, and came back speaking about God’s kindness!

Like so many of his generation he was hoping in that kindness which simply overlooks imperfections and rewards ‘best efforts’, ‘good intentions’, etc..

I was able to explain a little of the revealed nature of God as holy, righteous  and committed to justice, therefore committed to consistently deal fairly with sin of every degree.

A Policeman or Judge might be able to ‘turn a blind eye’, but the living God will not, can not!

Deuteronomy 18:13 (NKJV) You shall be blameless before the Lord your God.

1 Peter 1:15–16 (NKJV)  but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

Thankfully, God Is Also KIND, His KINDNESS is Shown in His Amazing Gift of His Only Son to Deliver Sinners from Judgement – That’s KINDNESS!

Titus 3:4–5 (NKJV) But when the kindness and the love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.

In a world changing act of mercy He has shown mercy to millions who deserve punishment – THAT’s KINDNESS! – Love in action, according to Charles Allen.

1 Corinthians 13:4 (NKJV)  Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up

Everyone knows the story of the ‘Good Samaritan’, that’s Kindness, a lesson in God’s kindness to those beaten up and left for dead by sin. Jesus [God] is the Good Samaritan who stoops down to tend our wounds, lift us out of danger and provided for all we need to bring us safe to heaven.

How?

Colossians 1:28 (NKJV) Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.

Those who understand the KINDNESS of God don’t want Him to turn a ‘blind eye’, they are rejoicing and resting in the work of God’s Son on the Cross to make them perfect, and thereby fit and ready for eternal life in the presence of the Perfect One.

Table loaded with information about the KINDNESS of God.

A Spring Day In Pickering.

Normal Spring Weather has Returned to our Area.

The ‘Steam Gala’ celebrating the 175th anniversary of the railway had to cope with the same mixture of sunshine and showers as the rest of us.

The Class A4 Steam Locomotive: The Elizabethan

Letting off Steam - Std Class 4 2-6-4t 80072

The Railway wasn’t alone in making the best of the opportunity, we were also out, ready and equipped for the rain.

Keeping the Rain Off.

Open for business when possible.

Though I did get a little bit worried when the little fella below waddled round the corner!

He came right up to the table, and stopped under my legs.

I also had a couple of familiar faces stop to talk.

Familiar Friends.

The real Highlight of the Day though, was two conversations I had with passers by:

The first was a Vicar and her husband, we have the pattern for speaking with religious professionals in John chapter 3, where the Lord Jesus informs Nicodemus that he needed to be born again before he could see or enter God’s kingdom.

John 3:3  Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

John 3:4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”

John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

An interesting discussion followed on the need for forgiveness and God’s provision of forgiveness through the sacrifice of His Son,

Luke 23:34  Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

Acts 5:31 Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.

She left with an assortment of literature and our prayer that she might truly know the work of God the Holy Spirit in her life.

The only explanation for the forgiveness of God and for the unfathomable depth of His forgetting is the death of Jesus Christ. Our repentance is merely the outcome of our personal realization of the atonement which He has worked out for us. It does not matter who or what we are; there is absolute reinstatement into God by the death of Jesus Christ and by no other way, not because Jesus Christ pleads, but because He died. It is not earned, but accepted. All the pleading which deliberately refuses to recognize the Cross is of no avail; it is battering at a door other than the one that Jesus has opened. Our Lord does not pretend we are all right when we are all wrong. The atonement is a propitiation whereby God, through the death of Jesus, makes an unholy man holy.  Oswald Chambers

The Second lady took a leaflet and read it as she walked on, only to stop and return it with an abrupt, ‘no thank you‘.

‘Is there a problem, has something happened to make you so anti the Gospel’?

After a moment’s hesitation she spoke of her sad situation, a child had died when very young from a virus, parents who had recently died of cancer, a brother who was at that very moment fighting cancer, ‘I can’t believe in a God who allows things like that to happen!

She didn’t stop long, and I pray that she  will turn to God instead of away from Him. He is the only possible source of comfort, the alternative is to be destroyed by the ugly reality of life without hope.

There are no hopeless situations; there are only people who have grown hopeless about them. – Clare Boothe Luce

A GOOD

OPPORTUNITY

TO SPEAK ABOUT

‘PEACE IN OUR TIME’.

Give us peace in our time, O Lord.

Over 700 leaflets were distributed, and so many people stopped to talk there’s not enough room to tell about them all.

Three examples will need to suffice:

The first lady saw the reference to peace and  thought we were Quakers!

I had the privilege of speaking with here about the One and only Saviour and Peace Maker, Jesus Christ.

Romans chapter 5 and verse 1:

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts chapter 10 and verse 36:

You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.

Man’s peace is just the absence of war, God’s peace is present and permanent, the kind for which  everyone is looking! You find it when you find Him!

The Second Was A Young Man, mid Twenties, Who’d never read anything from the Bible!

He gladly took away copies of booklets, but most especially, Luke’s Gospel, written to give a factual account of Jesus life, death and resurrection to a Roman Official called Theophilus.

Luke’s Gospel Chapter 1 and verses 3 and 4:

Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

Christianity is based on evidence, not emotion or imagination, within a few years of His death and resurrection Godly men like Luke checked and recorded the details.

The Third was a mature lady who boasted of being an Atheist.

I briefly challenged her with the statement that “It’s illogical to be an atheist as no mere human could ever prove the non existence of God, and that He might just be where she hadn’t looked. At best you can be an agnostic, because you just don’t know”.

She went on to tell me that she’d been a Sunday School teacher but now rejected all she’d taught!

How is this possible? Because liberal teaching has robbed many Christians of confidence in God’s Word, and modern society says you can’t be definite about anything.

I’m glad to say she left with something to read, I pray that the Lord has graciously revealed Himself to her in salvation.

Psalm 14 verse 1 doesn’t mince it’s words regarding those who reject the existence of God:

The fool says in his heart,  “There is no God.”

If you’ve read this far please don’t waste any more time in the muddle of modern times,

Seek God until you find Him and He delivers you from the shackles of sin, listen to Jesus:

Matthew chapter 11 verse 28 says:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
