If a tramp comes to us in dire need, down and out, in rags and tatters, and sick, even starving, it will be good to give him a bath and a change of clothing, but not enough. For he is ill and undernourished. So, in addition, he needs food and hospital treatment. Similarly, we come to Christ down and out, in the rags and tatters of our sin, spiritually sick and starving. In Christ, we are at once made welcome and accepted, and given a bath and a change of clothes. God sees us as righteous in Christ. This is our new status. But it is only the beginning. The Good Physician knows we are sick. So he puts His Spirit within us to give us new life and health, and He feeds us with His Word until we grow strong and vigorous. There are no half-measures with Him.

And Then It Rained!

CAUGHT OUT!

Today Started Out Like Any Other Saturday Lunch Time.

It was the ’60’s Weekend’ and there were a few people in town and some 60’s transport around.

A number of people happily took the the ‘Real Life’ leaflet.

A man paused and looked at the table, so I asked: ‘Have you heard the Gospel?’

Goodnews for Some

‘Oh, yes’, was his reply, ‘My sister is really into it’.

‘How about you’? ‘I used to be, but not any more.’ ‘Perhaps it’s time you reconsidered’?

‘No thanks’, was his reply and off he went round the corner and out of sight!

Matthew 7:13,14  (NKJV) “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

A young woman stopped, the testimony of Debbie Flood caught her attention

Our few minutes of conversation ended abruptly when she suddenly said: ‘I don’t like to be preached at’, deposited the leaflets she’d taken back on the table and left!

Mark 4:40 (NKJV) But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”

“Sinners never have true joy or feel inward peace, because; ‘there is no peace for the wicked,’ says the Lord (Isaiah 57:21).

We worry too much. We follow the example of our earthly father Adam when he confessed to God, “I was afraid … and hid” (Gen. 3:10). We have become a fearful people, even though most of our fears are often unfounded or just plain silly, because we do not have our eyes on the sparrow.

 THEN THE RAIN CAME:

Steaming in the Rain.

Time to pack up and go home? But wait:

Matthew 7:24–27 (NKJV) “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:  and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

A Peanuts cartoon pictured Lucy and Linus looking out the window at a steady downpour of rain. “Boy,” said Lucy, “look at it rain. What if it floods the whole world?”
“It will never do that.” Linus replied confidently. “In the ninth chapter of Genesis, God promised Noah that would never happen again, and the sign of the promise is the rainbow.”
“You’ve taken a great load off my mind,” said Lucy with a relieved smile. “Sound theology,” pontificated Linus, “has a way of doing that!”

THE TWO ALTERNATIVES RAISE MANY QUESTIONS – WHAT IS LIFE ALL ABOUT?

‘Who am I? What is my purpose in life? Why am I here? Where am I going? How can I be sure?

Challenging Physical Exercise Can Give A Sense of Well Being and Achievement.

So can a sweet cold ice cream or stroll by a pleasant stream.

But neither answer the Ultimate Questions, that relate to life and death.

Ultimate Questions Need Satisfactory Answers.

The Bible alone explains the meaning of life and introduces Jesus Christ who satisfies the deepest needs of believers.

It’s pages tell us of our special status as made in God’s image, then that we are made to walk in familiar communion with our maker. It further explains that your whole life is about recovering the relationship with God that is spoilt by sin. That this can only be accomplished through personal faith in Jesus Christ, wherein He delivers you from God’s wrath and eternal judgment. Confirmed as true by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who died on the cross, on the third day.

Its a lot to take in, but as you can see the table above is loaded with information, which is entirely free.  Just ask and we’ll do what we can to supply your need.

Acts 13:38 (NKJV)

Though I did get a little bit worried when the little fella below waddled round the corner!

He came right up to the table, and stopped under my legs.

I also had a couple of familiar faces stop to talk.

Familiar Friends.

The real Highlight of the Day though, was two conversations I had with passers by:

The first was a Vicar and her husband, we have the pattern for speaking with religious professionals in John chapter 3, where the Lord Jesus informs Nicodemus that he needed to be born again before he could see or enter God’s kingdom.

John 3:3  Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

John 3:4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”

John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

An interesting discussion followed on the need for forgiveness and God’s provision of forgiveness through the sacrifice of His Son,

Luke 23:34  Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

Acts 5:31 Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.

She left with an assortment of literature and our prayer that she might truly know the work of God the Holy Spirit in her life.

The only explanation for the forgiveness of God and for the unfathomable depth of His forgetting is the death of Jesus Christ. Our repentance is merely the outcome of our personal realization of the atonement which He has worked out for us. It does not matter who or what we are; there is absolute reinstatement into God by the death of Jesus Christ and by no other way, not because Jesus Christ pleads, but because He died. It is not earned, but accepted. All the pleading which deliberately refuses to recognize the Cross is of no avail; it is battering at a door other than the one that Jesus has opened. Our Lord does not pretend we are all right when we are all wrong. The atonement is a propitiation whereby God, through the death of Jesus, makes an unholy man holy.  Oswald Chambers

The Second lady took a leaflet and read it as she walked on, only to stop and return it with an abrupt, ‘no thank you‘.

‘Is there a problem, has something happened to make you so anti the Gospel’?

After a moment’s hesitation she spoke of her sad situation, a child had died when very young from a virus, parents who had recently died of cancer, a brother who was at that very moment fighting cancer, ‘I can’t believe in a God who allows things like that to happen!

She didn’t stop long, and I pray that she  will turn to God instead of away from Him. He is the only possible source of comfort, the alternative is to be destroyed by the ugly reality of life without hope.

There are no hopeless situations; there are only people who have grown hopeless about them. – Clare Boothe Luce

PEOPLE WITH WHOM WE SPOKE:

My first conversation was with Anthony. He happily conceded the existence of God and that we will most certainly meet Him on the judgement day, but had no fear of doing so. He thought God would welcome welcome everyone regardless of who they were or what they’d done.
It took some time, but I think I was able to persuade him that such an outlook was really quite dangerous, ignoring the evidence freely available to all who would take time to examine what He has revealed about Himself in His book, the Bible.

John Explains this in his Gospel, Chapter 3 verse 36

“He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
Wrath describes God’s attitude toward those who do not believe on Jesus Christ, He is offended by their unbelief!
Because He has taken time to send and sacrifice His Son to save sinners, those who ignore His work of salvation are in great trouble now and will feel His displeasure on the day they meet Him.
The Good News is that Jesus Christ has borne the full weight of this wrath on behalf of all who trust Him.

1Thessalonians, chapter 5, and verse 9

For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

The 11 am locomotive draws attention.

The 11 am locomotive draws attention.

If only people paid as much attention to preparing to meet our Holy God!

Everyone falls into one of the following two categories, the Good News, is that you can transfer from the first to the second, TODAY!

Revelation chapter 1 and verse 7  :

Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

Hebrews chapter 9 verse 28  :

Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

Mark was the next person with whom I spoke. He was happy to agree to most of the Biblical truth that I shared with him, but kept saying that assurance of sin’s forgiven depended on whether you had enough faith. I happily explained to him that the object of faith was what mattered and not the amount of faith.  It isn’t a form of energy by which we save ourselves, but a resting in the promises and person of Jesus Christ to do for us what we could never do for ourselves. His philosophy leaves him and all like him on a merciless treadmill where you never know when enough is enough. Listen to the Bible:

Galatians chapter 3 verse 22 :

But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

Romans chapter 10 verse 9:

if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Acts chapter 16 verse 31

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Nick and Vanessa explaining the amazing grace of God.

Nick and Vanessa explaining the amazing grace of God.

Finally, I spoke with Julie. She had previously received and read literature from us, and was happy to receive more. We pray that the Lord will reveal Himself to her, giving her the faith to believe and be saved.

Saving faith may thus be defined as a voluntary turning from all hope and grounds based on self merit, and assuming an attitude of expectancy toward God, trusting Him to do a perfect saving work based only on the merit of Christ. You never know how much you really believe anything until its truth or falsehood becomes a matter of life and death. It is easy to say you believe a rope to be strong as long as you are merely using it to cord a box. But suppose you had to hang by that rope over a precipice. Wouldn’t you then first discover how much you really trusted it? C. S. Lewis, A Grief Observed Galaxie Software. (2002; 2002). 10,000 Sermon Illustrations. Biblical Studies Press.

A 13 year old seeker:

Almost immediately on setting up the table a family on holiday stopped to talk, believers from Leeds, it became clear that their 13 year old daughter was unconverted and genuinely interested in what it meant to believe on Jesus Christ as Saviour. Our conversation revolved around the fact that John wrote his gospel with the specific purpose of providing the information needed to believe and be saved.

John chapter 20 verses 30 and 31:

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

She took the gospel away with her and to our great joy and delight, she brought it to church on Sunday and showed us how far she’d read! May God have mercy and save her.

An Older Man Who Hadn’t Heard The Gospel:

A gentleman in his 70’s stood to speak, a holidaymaker, and from my home area said that no one had ever told him of Jesus Christ dying for sinners or of his need to personally repent and believe the Good News. I found it hard to comprehend, but he insisted that what I was saying to him was entirely new.  He listened well and left with literature to read which would leave him in no doubt of his need and the Saviour’s power and willingness to save.

Mark Chapter 1 and verse 15 – Jesus says:

“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

A Spiritualist

Nick and Vanessa had opportunity to lay out the Gospel before a man who claimed to be a spiritualist healer, he was very sure that everyone would judge themselves on the last day, but was gently corrected and pointed to the only safe haven on that day – Jesus Christ.

Alpha Course Casualties:

A couple explained to Nick and Vanessa that they had attended the Alpha Course and now believed themselves to be Christians. It didn’t take long before we found out that they had no concept of their sins being forgiven, their hope lay entirely in a ‘god of love’ who is a caricature of the God who so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son to pay the penalty of sin and bring life and forgiveness to believers. I heard them say they were now hearing things which they’d never heard before.

So much of modern evangelicalism is ‘another gospel’, may the Lord deliver us from modern delusions and those who spread them! Its nothing new, Paul writes in:

Galatians chapter 1 verses 6 and 7:

I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.

Jesus Christ came to rescue sinners from their sin and the impending judgement of God against them. God’s Love is seen in the provision of His Son as substitute, but everyone must both repent and believe before they can enjoy the benefits of Christ’s great work.

Romans chapter 5 verse 8 and 9:

God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

Acts chapter 16 verses 30 and 31:

“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”  So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

If you’ve read this far, I plead with you in the name of the Lord Jesus, that you flee to Him for the forgiveness of your sin. Write and tell us if you need further help, or if you do indeed cast yourself upon His mercy.

I spoke with three people in particular, there was the older man who blushed as he said that asking whether ‘his sins were forgiven‘ was too personal a subject for conversation. O that all would understand that on the judgement day God’s ‘books will be opened’ and all unforgiven sin revealed!

I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.

Revelation chapter 20 verse 12

Then there was the young lady with her two children who listened to all I had to say but said very little herself, she went to ‘church’ ocassionally but knew nothing of her need of forgiveness, the heart of the Good News.

Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren,

that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins.

Acts chapter 13 verse 38.

Last but not least was the woman from North Wales who knew her need but thought that she needed ‘more faith‘. She was labouring under the delusion that she needed to believe more, and I had the privilege of explaining that forgiveness is based on the object of our faith, Jesus Christ, not the quantity or quality of our faith. The following three verses show that faith is God’s gift and the faith He gives saves.

For by grace you have been saved through faith,

and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

not of works, lest anyone should boast.

For we are His workmanship,

created in Christ Jesus for good works,

which God prepared beforehand

that we should walk in them.

Ephesians chapter 2 verses 8 to 10.

This article from Living Waters explains saving faith, its written by Kirk Cameron

Our Saviour speaks thus, Your faith has saved you, because He knows that it will be understood that faith is only the connecting link with Himself—that He really works the salvation, but that the faith of the Believer is the means of obtaining it.” Charles Spurgeon

I used to be confused about how I was “saved.” Was I saved by a belief I mustered up within my own heart, or was I saved by something God did in the purpose of His own heart? Spurgeon shed more light on this crucial subject of who does the saving, when he said, “…even our repentance needs to be repented of.” The point is that no earthly faith, repentance, good works, or belief that I have ever mustered from what exists in my own natural heart has ever saved me. The Bible is clear: My faith doesn’t save me, Jesus does (Ephesians 2:8-9). A believer’s faith in Jesus is a gift from God. My faith is the connecting channel through which God saved me by His own love and grace. So if you ever wonder if “your faith has saved you,” you may find this question helpful: “Is my trust in my own ability to hold on to Jesus, or is my trust in Jesus’ ability to hold on to me?” If you have received that humble, repentant faith that causes you to love God and trust in Jesus and Lord and Savior, then I would be very confident in echoing Jesus’ words, “Your faith has saved you.” ~ Kirk Cameron
